Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Since the global pandemic was announced in March 2020, we’ve helped to protect thousands of older people in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. From initiating new emergency COVID-19 projects, to adapting long-running programmes – we have tailored our response to meet the needs older people and their families.

Helping the world's most vulnerable older people

We’ve been working hard to support thousands of older people living in refugee camps in South Sudan and Bangladesh and war-torn countries such as Syria. They have already gone through so much to find the relative safety of the camps, but coronavirus has brought renewed fear and hardship. Read how we've been helping below.

Bangladesh

Syria

India

When coronavirus cases in India surged during a deadly second wave, we acted quickly to keep older people safe.

"Life was hard during corona but now life is improving. Assistance has come back and distribution of food and water have started again. I hope this disease goes away so we can have a good life like before."

Stories from the ground

From distributing hygiene kits and providing mental health support to medical health checks and installing sanitisation stations, we tailored our response to meet the needs of older people and their families. Read some of their stories below.

Teresa (pictured), in Managteen Camp, South Sudan

The conflict in South Sudan forced Teresa Nyegiery to leave her home, she walked non-stop for seven days to save her family. Living in Mangateen camp, the outbreak of COVID-19 brought back old fears of food and hunger. We reached Teresa and older people like her with food, masks, and hygiene kits.
