India’s volunteer COVID heroes

During a heart-breaking time in India, home care volunteers have emerged as true heroes, providing hope to vulnerable older people.

The volunteers are sharing information on how to protect themselves from the virus with older people, as well as delivering essential supplies to doorsteps during this difficult period.

A group of volunteers makes facemasks to protect older people

Lata, from Shimla, in the Himachal Pradesh region, is one such volunteer. She has been reaching out to older people and listing their needs so they can provide as much as possible. At one point the older people she cares for were struggling to get face masks. Lata joined together with other volunteers to raise money and purchase face masks, but unfortunately the supply simply wasn’t there. Lata then came up with the idea of making her own masks, sharing the idea with other volunteers who were just as enthusiastic. Together, they prepared and distributed around 300 masks to at risk older people!
