Earthquake appeal: Harsh winter and lack of aid threatens survivors

In the Syrian northwest town of Jindires over 4,000 families have been left homeless after the catastrophic earthquake struck Syria and Türkiye on the 6 February 2023.
We have been working with our local partner Syrian Expatriate Medical Association (SEMA) to deliver life-saving care. Dr Wassel Aljerk, the programme manager at SEMA has warned that the situation in the worst hit town of Jindires is catastrophic, with thousands lacking food, water, shelter, hygiene items and healthcare.
“There are less than 1,000 tents in Syria to provide shelter when around 40,000 are needed.”
With so many older, vulnerable people and their families being homeless, they are now at risk of hypothermia as they struggle to survive in sub-zero temperatures. Dr Wassel said: “It’s freezing now, we are in the middle of winter.” Older people are at greater risk due to their inability to withstand extreme temperatures, pre-existing conditions and mobility issues.
The northwest region of Syria was already struggling, with millions of internally displaced people dependant on humanitarian aid for 12 years due to the war. Dr Wassel Aljerk said that aid is struggling to reach Syria and that they are desperate and in need of support.
“The main road for these materials to pass is from Turkey. And the demand in Turkey is very, very high.”
The lack of aid is leaving survivors frustrated and abandoned. With no stock, equipment, tents or capabilities to respond, the situation is dire.
Donations are essential to help us provide critical care to those who have lost their homes and loved ones in Syria. With our support, we can ensure that survivors of the earthquake are not left out in the cold.
Will you help older people in Türkiye and Syria?
The death toll is rising by the hour and is expected to increase significantly. Survivors urgently need shelter, medical assistance and food. Your donation could help with aid and support that is tailored to the needs of older people and their families. Please donate today, even a small donation could make a huge difference.
